uPVC Sash Windows
A classic, traditional window style used in English houses for hundreds of years, sash windows first came to prominence in the 17th century, a familiar fixture in Gregorian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Deriving its name from the French word “chassis,” which means “frame,” it is comprised of one or more movable sashes or panels forming a frame which holds panes of glass that are normally separated from other panes by glazing bars. Although sash windows have been in existence for centuries, they have never gone out of style and are still very much in use today.
Sash windows serve to give a house or building a timeless period feel. But even if you desire a window built in the old style, you would still want it to be as strong and sturdy as any good modern window. With uPVC sash windows, you can get the best of both worlds; a time-honored design re-interpreted through 21st century ingenuity.

Are uPVC windows good?
Are uPVC windows good as, if not better than traditional timber sash windows? Well, for one thing, they are made of a much more versatile material than wood. uPVC, or Un-Plasticized Polyvinyl Chloride, is among the most commonly-used building materials today, and for good reason. Durable and resilient, uPVC is tough enough to last for decades. It is weatherproof, and has great thermal and sound insulation, making it ideal in manufacturing modern sash windows.
In terms of cost, uPVC sash windows are a much more affordable alternative in comparison to the more expensive wooden variety. They are also very easy to maintain; you would only need to give it a good wiping every once in a while, and you won’t ever have to repaint it. You wouldn’t even have to worry about them getting chewed up by termites or other insects. uPVC also happens to be environmentally-friendly, not just because it is an alternative to using wood, but because it is a recyclable material.

Inherent in a uPVC Sash Window
The thermal insulation properties inherent in a uPVC sash window, coupled with its high-grade double glazing, ensures the retention of heat within your home, saving you a lot in heating expenses. But uPVC windows aren’t just good at keeping warmth, they can also keep you cool during warm weather. While warm air from the room escapes through the top opening of the window, the cooler air from the outside is allowed to enter through the bottom.
uPVC sash windows mainly come in 3 classic styles that remain very popular up to now. The first is the Gregorian style, which is characterized by 6 upper panels on top of 6 bottom panels held together with astragal bars, and is chiefly used for decorative purposes. The Victorian style utilizes 2 panels each for the top and bottom sections. The third style, Edwardian, is composed of 6 panes at the top and 2 at the bottom, and particularly evokes an early 20th century feel.

Optional Types of Glazing
Double glazing is the standard method applied to the glass of a uPVC sash window. Aside from this, there are 2 other optional types of glazing. The second option, triple glazing, is used to enhance energy efficiency. The third option uses acoustic glass for additional sound insulation.
But if you want the look of your new window to be as close as possible to that of traditional timber windows, uPVC sash windows are easily customizable to any specific form or color that you prefer. If you want it to have an authentic-looking wooden finish, you can choose from an array of wood-like hues such as Irish Oak, Light Oak, Golden Oak, Rosewood, Black Brown and Siena.
uPVC sash windows come in a wide range of colors suited for every taste. If you opt for a somewhat contemporary urban look, you can go for one of several shades of grey such as Agate, Basalt, Silver and Slate, or the greyish-tinted Chartwell Green, or the darker-toned Anthracite. For a warmer tone, you have Dark Red. For cooler tones, there’s Steel Blue, Moss Green and Dark Green. Or if you want to keep things simple, a coat of Cream White would do.
